ICLEI provides comprehensive climate action tools, support, and networking so that you can deliver tangible results.
ICLEI’s Five Milestones framework has paved the way for hundreds of communities to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and prepare for climate impacts. Following the framework, communities assess their current condition, set a goal, develop a climate or resilience plan, carry out the plan, and monitor for success.
Each year, ICLEI celebrates its members’ success by distributing Milestone Awards to communities advancing through the framework.

“Our ICLEI memberships have paid dividends far greater than the modest fees required. Beyond the rich library of research and tools to advance climate action, and the networking opportunities with like-minded counterparts in other municipalities; the technical assistance and expert guidance that we received from ICLEI allowed us to leverage internal resources to develop our first GHG inventories under the Global Protocol for Community-Scale Greenhouse Gas Inventories. With our baseline inventories archived in ClearPath, we are now using it to crunch our data and identify the most impactful strategies to reduce and eliminate carbon emissions. I look forward to increasing our utilization of ICLEI’s expanding capabilities.”

We incorporate both theory and procedure to ensure that our members are equipped to systematically improve their community’s sustainability, equity, and resilience.
At ICLEI, we believe that we are stronger when learning and working collaboratively — that is why we host learning and working cohorts. The cohort model combines ICLEI support with peer encouragement to simultaneously achieve the best results while keeping costs low. Cohort examples include 14 Indiana communities building GHG reduction capacity and 21 California communities promoting high-efficiency construction.
